Tiger’s Out, Is the PGA to Follow?

Everyone and their mother knows what happened to Tiger Woods that one late Thanksgiving night. Though there is speculation of what really happened, (SPOILER ALERT-DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING ON TMZ AND PEOPLE MAGAZINE), Tiger’s golf game has never been the same. So, now that all the excitement of golf disappeared virtually overnight, why should we watch golf tournaments anymore? Well, though there may not ever be a golfer as dominant to sweep the PGA like Tiger did, there are some exciting young golfers that the public should take note of.

Tiger Woods was arguably one of the most dominant athletes in his sport. He made people like me, who weren’t too excited to watch the Sunday stretch of the U.S. Open with their grandfather, want to watch the tournament Thursday through Sunday non-stop. To me, Tiger completely changed the game. He worked out, kept in shape, and became a prominent advertising king for several major companies. He married a beautiful model, was always in the celebrity magazines and was looked up too not only by the African American community, but to all inspiring young golfers. He made kids who thought golf was for old people, want to pick up a club and start swinging away.

The PGA was at an all-time high in ratings weekend to weekend, with people waiting to see how Tiger’s next legendary shot was going to come, in his “Sunday Red.” The fact is, all that came crashing down after the “family outburst.” But, when Tiger said he was coming out of his den and back to the game of golf everyone was excited to see how he did. As we know, week after week Tiger would get worse and worse, until he made it clear, that his knee needed surgery and he needed to take more time out.

Tiger wanted to make his come back at the U.S. Open this weekend but this was not within reach for Tiger. Even Tiger’s caddy, Steve Williams, has moved on to find other income, caddying for Adam Scott this weekend. The question is now, who and why should we watch now that Tiger’s out? There is good news; young golfers are starting to arise to the top and make golf fun to follow again.

Obviously, if you were a Tiger fan, it would be wrong to say you were also a Phil Mickelson fan as well. Every hero has to have a villain; you could say Mickelson was a Ying to Tiger’s Yang. Not just Mickelson we can enjoy, but young golfers like Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler and many others give young golfers reason to watch this weekend. They are the future of golf right now, as we are unsure of Tiger’s future.

So, go ahead and turn the channel to ESPN, watch the U.S. Open and enjoy the young guns. Although, Tiger isn’t able to play, there are 160 other reasons to watch. Sit back, relax and enjoy the next four days of great golf.
